Singapore added two more golds to their medal tally on the third day of competition at the South East Asian Youth Table Tennis Championships 2024 in Kuala Lumpur, after winning the U19 Mixed Doubles and U15 Girls Doubles events.

It was an all-Singapore affair in the U19 Mixed Doubles final as the Loy siblings, Xing Yao, 15, and Ming Ying, 13, faced off against Nicholas Tan, 17, and Tan Zhao Yun, 19, with both pairs having successfully negotiated their semifinal matches, with the former pair winning 3-0 against Vietnam and the latter 3-1 victors over Malaysia. Nicholas, who had won the title last year with Ser Lin Qian, was also looking to make it back to back golds.

However, the Loy siblings proved too strong for their fellow Singaporeans, as they took the game 11-3, 9-11, 11-7, 11-4.

Following that victory, Ming Ying then partnered fellow Singapore Sports School teammate, Janelle Chiang, 14, to go on a four game winning run in the U15 Girls Doubles, as they cruised to a comfortable victory in the final against the Vietnam pair of Nguyen Nhu Quynh and Do Le Van Chi, winning in straight sets, 14-12, 11-6, 13-11.

However, they had to dig deep in the semifinal against Thailand’s Mathavee Tantiput and Phichaphak Ariyachotima, when they found themselves 2-1 down but managed to claw their way back to a 3-2 victory.

The U19 Boys doubles pair of Loy Xing Yao and Aron Ng had to settle for a joint-bronze, after they lost to Tran Manh Cuong and Nguyen Hoang Lam, 3-11, 12-14, 11-13 in the semifinals.

Likewise, there was a joint-bronze for the U19 Girls doubles pair of Chloe Lai and Tan Zhao Yun, when they were defeated by Lim Jing Shuen and Low Yu Xuan of Malaysia, 1-3.

After three days of competition, Singapore’s medal tally stands at 4 Golds, 1 Silver and 3 Bronzes.
