Singapore added two more bronze medals on the penultimate day of competition on Saturday at the Southeast Asian Championships (SEA) 2024 in Nonthaburi, Thailand, courtesy of the Men’s and Women’s doubles pairs.
Nicholas Tan and Yang Ze Yi, both 17, took on Malaysia’s number one pairing of Javen Choong and Wong Qi Shen in the semifinals, and the Singapore teenagers put up a brave fight in their 3-1 defeat, losing to the defending SEA Games silver medalists, 4-11, 7-11, 11-5, 7-11.
With that bronze, it meant that Nicholas ended his SEA Championships as the most bemedalled Singapore male athlete of the games, with 3 bronze medals – the other two coming in Men’s team and Mixed Doubles events.
It was another battle between the Causeway rivals in the Women’s Doubles semifinal, as Tan Zhao Yun (19) and Zhang Wanling (24), faced Karen Lyne and Tee Ai Xin from Malaysia.
Tan and Zhang, who reached the quarterfinals of the Asian Championships in October, gave it their best and kept it as close as possible, but they could not find a way past the resolute opponents, who prevailed 3-0 with a score of 11-8, 11-8, 11-9.
Tan clinched her 3rd medal of the games, with 1 Gold and 2 Bronze in the Women’s Team and Mixed Doubles.
Singapore finished their SEA Championships 2024 campaign with 1 Gold from the Women’s team event, and 4 Bronze from the Men’s Team, Mixed Doubles, Men’s Doubles and Women’s Doubles.
