
Singapore teenager, Tan Zhao Yun ( 陈昭澐 ), 18, making her first appearance on the WTT circuit this year, clinched the Girls U19 singles title at the WTT Youth Contender Tunis 2024 on Monday, 26 February, when she outlasted Mia Gressel of Germany, 3-2, in a hard fought final. This was her first ever singles title on the WTT circuit.
“I feel proud of this win because it’s my first championship of the year and it’s also my first time winning the WTT Youth Contender. How I secured this win was to be patient and be clear of my own strategy when playing and just keep fighting and pressing on even when I’m trailing behind.” Tan Zhao Yun
She recovered from a 2-3 defeat to Wong Hoi Tung of Hong Kong in her first group stage match, to rattle off 5 straight wins on her way to victory, of which 4 of the wins were won in straight sets by a scoreline of 3-0, including an all Singapore clash in the semi final against Chloe Lai.
Lai secured joint-3rd.
There was also joy for Loy Ming Ying ( 黎明映 ), 14, as she added another trophy to her burgeoning cabinet when she finished joint-3rd in the Girls U15, after losing to Su Tsz Tung of Hong Kong, 1-3, in the semifinals.
