Table Tennis Coaching Development Pathway

The Singapore Coach Excellence (SG-Coach) Programme aims to establish a training and development system to develop high quality and professional coaches to all sports. Coaches will gain multi-dimensional skills in the area of sports science, coaching, life skills, evidence-based practices and will be able to promote social values and principles. The SG-Coach Programme is a replacement of National Coaching Accreditation Programme (NCAP). Coaches will now be able to enroll in required certification courses based on course availability and their interests.

There are 2 main components for SG-Coach Programme:

1. Theory: cover general principles of coaching
2. Technical: cover sport specific considerations

Regarding the technical component of above-mentioned in table tennis, STTA is the appointed National Sports Association to offer and evaluate accreditation. More specifically, there are two methods of accreditation available for interested individuals:

1. Accreditation through coursework: STTA conducts Technical Coaching Course yearly to provide sport-specific knowledge and training in technical competencies. With the support from CoachSG, STTA had developed the syllabus for SG-Coach (Full Integration) Table Tennis Coaching Course, which encompasses theory and sports science components as well. Candidates who complete and pass this Table Tennis Coaching Course will be awarded full accreditation for the SG-Coach Programme. Please check out the courses page for details of upcoming courses.
2. Accreditation (only Technical) through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Prior Experience (RPE): individuals who had formal learning in areas of coaching or with relevant technical skills and knowledge as well as relevant coaching experience may apply according to STTA Accreditation Policy.

SG-Coach Level 1 Table Tennis (Full Integration) Coaching Course 

This 30-hours course has a comprehensive table tennis coaching curriculum which encompassed both theory and technical modules. Other than table tennis specific knowledge, it also covers general topics like Safe Sport and Sport Safety, Values and principles in sports as well as foundational sport science.

Upon completion of the course (by completion of the compulsory E-Learning on SportSG-ED, submission of assignments, passing the theory tests and technical competency assessment and completion of 30 hours of practical attachment and registration for NROC), participants shall be issued the associated certifications, including the SG-Coach Level 1 (Full Integration) Coaching Certification.

Participants at least 18 years old at time of registration and are required to take and pass a pre-requisite skills test before they can register for this course. Participants who fulfill the following may be exempted from the pre-requisite skills test:

• Current national players and intermediate squads (IS)
• Ex-national coaches, players and IS who have represented Singapore from year 2018 – 2023
• Current STTA coaches
• Current Singapore Sports School coaches
• Obtained SSC/SportSG Technical (Table Tennis) or ITTF Coaching Certification

Supporting documents must be submitted for exemption.

Registration Process

1. Step 1: Complete the pre-requisite skills test online registration form, make payment via e-payment only and upload the payment details on/before the deadline.
2. Step 2: Receive confirmation and allocated timeslot from STTA and attend the skills test.
3. Step 3: Passed or exempted participants shall receive the online coaching course registration form from STTA at least one day after the skills test.
4. Step 4: Register an account for SportSync ID (Annex B).
5. Step 5: Complete the online coaching course registration form, make payment via e-payment only and upload the payment details and your profile picture on/before the deadline.
6. Step 6: Receive confirmation and relevant information regarding the coaching course from STTA.

1.            Coaches’ Code of Conduct

All STTA Coaches shall:

1.1  abide by the announced rules, sports policies and procedures of STTA

1.2  conduct themselves at all times, in a manner that does not bring the sport, STTA key partners or themselves into disrepute

1.3  make a positive commitment and endeavour to achieve the aims and objectives as detailed in the STTA High Performance programmes

1.4  be positive role models for all STTA Athletes

1.5  treat relationships with all other persons (including Athletes, other Coaches, members of STTA staff, or members of the public) with respect and honesty

1.6  endeavour at all times to be mindful of safety in the course of training, competition or any other STTA activity.

1.7  refrain from engaging in activities or events unbecoming of a STTA Coach, including but not limited to the following:

1.7. 1 making derisory or derogatory comments about an Athlete’s performance;

1.7.2  smoking and/or consuming alcohol when in training camps, major championships and international events; and

1.7.3  be involved in any form of altercation with any other athlete, spectator or other person, and shall not engage in abusive, abrasive or disorderly conduct

1.7.4  not engage in any activities or conduct contrary to the laws of Singapore or in any place where the training or competition is held and further, refrain from any activity or conduct that would put Sport Singapore (SG) and/or STTA in negative publicity, embarrassment or disrepute.
